Different letters can require different attention
Read the communication as a whole, including its notice identifier, tax period, explanation, and response instructions. A balance request is not automatically the same as a proposed change or a request for records. If the letter refers to information you do not recognize, preserve that question rather than deciding the account must be correct or incorrect before the source facts are reviewed. Official IRS notice information provides useful background, but the actual communication remains central.
Relate the service task to the letter
Ask what work would examine the issue and how the response process will be understood. Identify available returns, statements, payment confirmations, and earlier correspondence relevant to that period. Do not confuse a prepared answer with a completed submission. Keep the real evidence of any action and the response that follows. The website cannot establish an extension, approval, or account result; its explanations help make a conversation about the notice more specific.
